Medication Mythbusters – Home of the Best Science (BS) Medicine Podcast

The BS Medicine Podcast episodes are presented by James McCormack and Michael Allan. We try to promote healthy skepticism and critical thinking and most of the podcasts are presented in a case-based approach. We also try to inject some humour into the whole process to make the learning more interesting. Occasionally we have great guests like Mike Kolber, Tina Korownyk and Bruce Arroll help us out.

Most podcast episodes are available for free until they become archived after about 1-2 months. Every 4th episode or so is a “New Studies You Need to Know About” podcast and these will only be available to our Premium Podcast members. Premium members will also be able to listen to all archived episodes since episode #1.

Episode 337: PREMIUM – studies that will make your life even more PREMIUM

In episode 337, Mike and James yet again go over even more studies that you really need to know about. We cover questions around duration of antibiotics for otitis media, NSAID cardiovascular safety and children with atopic dermatitis and the need for bathing before applying steroids. And the answers are yes, no and maybe, except on Tuesdays.

Episode 334: Santa Claus – is he more important to parents than children?

In episode 334, Mike and James present the real evidence around a fictional, or is he, Santa Claus. We give everyone an evidence-based present wrapped in a systematic review. We discuss if Santa makes us kinder, and – SPOILER ALERT – when do children stop believing in Santa and does finding out scar them emotionally for life.

Episode 332: Erectile dysfunction – a hard look at the evidence – PART II

In episode 332, James and Mike put a finishing touch on their upstanding erectile dysfunction discussion. We spend most of the podcast talking about treatments and options for ED and at the end we decide to never again be in the same room when talking about such a sensitive topic.

Episode 331: Erectile dysfunction – a hard look at the evidence

In episode 331, James and Mike talk about the ups and downs of erectile dysfunction. We take a penetrating look at the epidemiology and what initial assessments should be done – treatments will pop-up in the next podcast. Fortunately or unfortunately, we rarely raise our comments above what would be expected from 14 year-old boys.

Episode 330: PREMIUM – Diabetes, all the good, the bad and the ugly

In episode 330, Mike and James do a PREMIUM job of looking at 2 important new publications about medications for type 2 diabetes. We look at an RCT of semaglutide that actually shows a benefit. We then look at a very thorough systematic review/meta-analysis of all the studies and publications around T2DM since 1998. The results demonstrate very clearly that the evidence doesn’t really support what is being written in the diabetes clinical practice guidelines.

Episode 329: A dementia update you will hopefully remember – PART II

In episode 329, Mike and James continue with their update on the treatment of dementia. We talk about prevention and how to figure out if an individual is getting a benefit from treatment. Bottom line, it is very tricky. We also talk about non-drug treatments and the latest new drug treatment.
