Medication Mythbusters – Home of the Best Science (BS) Medicine Podcast

The BS Medicine Podcast episodes are presented by James McCormack and Michael Allan. We try to promote healthy skepticism and critical thinking and most of the podcasts are presented in a case-based approach. We also try to inject some humour into the whole process to make the learning more interesting. Occasionally we have great guests like Mike Kolber, Tina Korownyk and Bruce Arroll help us out.

Most podcast episodes are available for free until they become archived after about 1-2 months. Every 4th episode or so is a “New Studies You Need to Know About” podcast and these will only be available to our Premium Podcast members. Premium members will also be able to listen to all archived episodes since episode #1.

Episode 500: THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO LISTEN!!!

James and Mike celebrate their 500th, YIKES, podcast episode. You get to hear the entire intro song (Some People) written and recorded by Pete McCormack. We talk about the history of the podcast, thank a lot of people, and talk about the key messages and the philosophy we have tried to impart over the years. We then discuss a few cases that bring all these ideas into focus. THANKS SO MUCH FOR LISTENING and going on this journey with us. We have had a blast.

Episode 499: No Gain, No Pain? – Diet-induced weight loss for OA knee pain

In episode 499, James and Mike invite Tina back again to discuss the evidence we have for dieting to lose weight and the impact of that on osteoarthritis knee pain. Overall, there isn’t a lot of evidence but some observational data suggests a benefit Unfortunately the relatively small weight loss achieved from most diets in RCTs did not demonstrate a difference on OA pain.

Episode 497: The Nutrition Proposition – a teaser

Episode 495: Medications in HFpEF: The Fail Trail

In episode 495, Mike and James invite Ricky back again to talk about the options (not a lot) we have for heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction. Ricky goes over all the trials and helps put them into context.

Episode 494: Colchicine for your heart – it may not be just for gout

In episode 494, Mike and James invite Ricky Turgeon to talk about a potential new use for an old drug – colchicine. Ricky explains all the evidence we have for low-dose colchicine in people with a history of cardiovascular disease. We find out that colchicine reduces the risk of a cardiovascular event in a similar magnitude to statins – but will they be used as much as statins.? Find out what we think.

Episode 492: PREMIUM – New data on footwear and salt substitutes

In episode 492, Mike and James delve into a couple of potentially practice-changing results. The first trial looked at the effect of different shoes for knee osteoarthritis. You might be surprised by the results. The second trial is the first ever look at a salt substitute and what it does, believe it or not, to cardiovascular events and death. Yeah! You might also be surprised by the results. Check out what was found in this PREMIUM podcast.
